We love the play dates at the school. Especially since small dogs, off leash is a difficult scenario to try and duplicate anywhere else. My experience is that you simply can't underestimate the value in terms of confidence building. In addition, a tired dog is a happy dog and two hours of socializing will poop any pooch out!

Regine,
We took them to Dogs at Camp. It's close to Arnprior and Packenham, but well worth the drive. Hemi absolutely loved it. I think Copper and Puzzle would too!

Looking forward to seeing you all again,

Chantal

Wow, lots going on. Which dog camp did Hemi and Everest go to?

We'll be back soon with Puzzle to give agility a try.

Thank you both - and Lynn - I like your comment ... if the treats are a tool that is one thing - as logn as it isn't a 'forever" situation... i can live with it. Although .... i honestly think Monte isn't a treat loving boy. i have yet to find one he'd prefer over say ... his soccer ball being tossed for a fetch.

There is a significant difference between using food to train a behaviour VS bribing a dog with food to elicit a behaviour. Most handlers think that once the dog has performed a behaviour a number of time, they ""know'' it and so their job is done, however that's when the hard work really begins! They don't realize that more often than not, they have not taken the time to build a solid foundation, yet they expect their dog to perform on cue. The use of food is a TEACHING tool. A good training program will not only ensure you use food properly to teach the dog a new behaviour, it will then include a variable and intermittent schedule for treating and will also incorporate payment for compliance with LIFE REWARDS (i.e. door opens for a walk, getting to greet a dog, tug toy, etc). If done right, the handler will not need to ensure he's got a pocket-full of treats to elicit compliance out in the real world because the dog is addicted to the game - not the food. Only once the foundation is solid can you start building the skyscraper.

The solution is to experiment and find what, for your dog, is in his A-list of rewards. A cuddle and an "atta-boy" are rewards, but would be in the B-List. For most dogs, the A-list will be food. However, there are other options to get your dog to work enthusiastically for you. My Great Dane is not crazy about treats. But I've found something he really values that is not food, but higher value than a cuddle and praise and definitely on his A-List.
As for the park, in most cases the other dogs will be more interesting than the treat you have in your pocket. The recall at the park is more complex than using a treat to get your dog to come back. It is about motivation though, and we cover this in the basic obedience (2 lessons are devoted to the Recall).

Sonja - I have the fully balanced, ground meat, with bone and organs. If you are feeding raw, you must have all components - meat, fat, bones, organ. $2.38 a pound isn't bad, especially if you're feeding a small dog! I have 2 large dogs, so that would be too expensive. I would have to get lbs and lbs of the Posh Nosh and it would break the bank. The meat I have is $1 a lb. There is turkey, Chicken and Liver, and other combos.
